Sketches
– practice hundred of rough, unfinished sketches to experiment
– learn new processes
– fail early and often on your own experiment time, so you can become more efficient and fail less on paid work
– pay attention to coherence. how elements are related, structure, materials, engineering aspect of a scene. Adds credibility
Digital vs traditional medium
– traditional = expensive (materials, paper, paint). Needs a lot of practice and thought
– digital is cheaper, infinitely changeable
– risk of loosing track of reflexion, deliberate process
Rules
– know them, break them
– find your own process
– validate your own approach, deliberate process
Contrast
– exaggerate differences : light/dark, neutral/intense, big/small, slow/fast, rough/detailed etc
– artist as visual entertainer, Keep the eye entertained
Drawing
– more than just drawing lines
– drawing is everything (outside of color and value maybe)
– every decision about what is detailed or not, what to keep and what to leave out
– good image remains good when turned in B&W, reduced as thumbnail or blurred
Photography
– forget the macho painting approach and use whatever tool is available to get the job done
– experiment with using photographs in various ways at experiment time
– learn to walk away from photography when you can afford it
– drawing from life a better way to learn subtleties of forms, light, materials instead of a fixed snapshot from a photograph
Demo
