{"id":460,"date":"2015-05-09T16:38:08","date_gmt":"2015-05-09T20:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alquier.org\/linfa\/?p=460"},"modified":"2017-05-29T14:34:34","modified_gmt":"2017-05-29T18:34:34","slug":"browser-bookmarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.alquier.org\/laurent\/sites\/2015\/05\/09\/browser-bookmarks\/","title":{"rendered":"Browser Bookmarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another personal system I developed over time to simplify my digital life.<\/p>\n<p>For years, I had a tendency to use the favorite or bookmark functions in web browsers as a dump for all sorts of links I would end up never visiting again.<\/p>\n<p>I ended up organizing bookmarks into categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shortcuts to frequently used forums and social media sites<\/strong> &#8211; for these, I use the favorites toolbar present in most folders and edit out the name of the bookmark, leaving only the icon of that site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bookmarklets to send a quick post to blogs<\/strong> &#8211; I group these into a &#8216;Post to..&#8217; folder in the favorites toolbar for quick access<\/li>\n<li><strong>Links to videos to watch later<\/strong> &#8211; I\u00a0save those into a &#8216;Watchlist&#8217; folder, also in the favorite toolbar<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shortcuts to personal sites, accounts, profiles<\/strong> &#8211; these go into folders, also in the favorite toolbar, and named after a handful of high level categories like &#8216;Home&#8217;, &#8216;Finance&#8217;, &#8216;Create&#8217;, &#8216;Play&#8217;, &#8216;Work&#8217;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reference links<\/strong> &#8211; for links to pages I want to be able to search later, I use Diigo and tags to organize the links. I started with Delicious and eventually dropped it when it was almost discontinued by Yahoo. These days, I configured Diigo to save a backup of all links to Delicious.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Articles to read later<\/strong> &#8211; for long articles, I use Pocket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also use some features from Chrome to make things easier to organize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Google account synchronization<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0to keep all my instances of Chrome in sync with the same favorites structure<\/li>\n<li><strong>Better History extension<\/strong> &#8211; to display past links and searches in a calendar form<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simple Bookmarks extension<\/strong> &#8211; to allow the optional display of bookmarks in a side panel next to the browser window (feature sorely missing in Chrome)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Session buddy<\/strong> &#8211; to save automatically long lists of open browser tabs (these tabs act as a memory of things to revisit soon, and need to be preserved from browser crashes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another personal system I developed over time to simplify my digital life.
